Wheel Alignments in Iowa City, IA
Have you noticed your vehicle doesn’t drive like it used to? Maybe it has a persistent pull to one side while driving on straight, uncrowned roads, or maybe the steering wheel doesn’t center itself readily after rounding a corner? Have you noticed uneven wear along the inside or outside edge of one of the front tires, or does the steering and handling just feel “clumsy” and heavy?
If you can answer “yes” to any of the above questions, chances are you may have a wheel alignment problem.
Every vehicle leaves the factory with the wheels set at very specific angles, relative to each other, the vehicle’s frame and an imaginary straight line down the center of the vehicle. These angles are designed by engineers for the best possible steering response, cornering and overall road manners. A hard hit on a curb or pothole, however, can be enough to jolt the front end components and cause these angles to drift.
The four main angles are:
- Toe-out, the outward skew of the front wheels
- Toe-in, the inward skew of the front wheels
- Camber, the inward or outward tilt of the front wheels as seen from the front
- Caster, the fore-and-aft orientation of the front wheels
A change in any of these angles can be significant enough to affect your vehicle’s handling and road manners. Worse than that, though, it’s costing you money in terms of premature tire wear.
When a tire is skewed to one side, it will be “dragged along” by the other tires as it constantly tries to steer the vehicle in another direction (hence that annoying pull to one side on straight roads). That means excessive rolling resistance, costing you in terms of fuel economy, and a tire that will soon be worn unevenly with the tread scrubbed off an inside or outside edge. This type of tire wear is not covered under warranty!
